Radhe Shyam Movie Review : The Story turns out to be a turgid romantic drama hidden behind the glossy visuals

Radhe Shyam is the most anticipated blockbuster post-Bahubali’s success for the massive fan circle of Pan-India Star Prabhas. It was written and directed by Radha Krishna Kumar and was filmed both in Telugu and Hindi with separate soundtracks and was released nationwide on 11th March 2022.

Amid huge expectancy and eagerness, the film got a mixed response from the viewers. It looked like the director Radha Krishna Kumar wanted the film to encapsulate too many things like fairy-tale romance in European backdrop, the mysterious struggle of hero tossing around the fate and free-will, and an off-the-edge climax event ending with a profound platitude. But the screenplay is not up to the mark all over the film and especially the climax of threatening Tsunami (unsuccessful homage to Titanic’s climax) seemed obscure, lacking clarity and emotional engagement to the audience.

The story takes place in 1976 and Vikram Aditya (Prabhas) is a renowned palmist of that time. His introductory scene is with Indira Gandhi where he reads her hand and tells her she would declare emergency. He is known for his temerity and expertise through this scene and was called out as “the Einstein of Palmistry.” His predictions are so accurate that he himself is convinced that he’s not going to fall in love since he doesn’t have a love line on his palm. However, he starts doubting his skill after seeing Prerana (Pooja Hegde) and falling in love with her. Pooja Hegde gave her best performing beside Prabhas as a lead role. Prerana is dealing with her health-related issues and scared of being died because of that but Vikram as a palmist is certain in his belief that she has a long life to live. And then the story gradually unfolds in a sequence of events asserting to us that the fate of human beings does not lie in the lines of their palms but in the strength of their hands.

Although the message seemed interesting the plot of the story is largely predictable and excruciatingly torturous to watch. The story contained nothing more than intense romantic scenes for a 140min overlong film with some unexciting fairy-tale dialogues exchanged. The characterization of the supporting characters is frivolous with no proper engagement with the audience. But the job of the cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa and the VFX team is commendable. Every setting and milieu is gorgeous and impeccably beautiful to the eye. So, as a whole, the film Radhe Shyam is pleasantly beautiful in terms of cinematography but a lacklustre instead of blockbuster when it comes to context.
