HOME REMEDIES FOR COUGH AND COLD FOR BABIES

Many mothers are worried that their baby gets affected by cough and cold frequently but are unaware of how to calm its symptoms. Moreover, using over-the-counter (OTC) drugs to clear the baby’s nose might not be a good suggestion as they can cause harmful side effects for infants and toddlers. So, let’s discuss some of the home remedies that can act as cough and cold suppressants for your child.

HOME REMEDIES FOR COUGH

Try Nasal Drops

If your child has a running nose ask them to blow away or use a nasal aspirator or suction bulb for newborns to get rid of the mucus. However, for babies with sticky mucus and a blocked nose use saline water drops. Saline nasal drops can thin the mucus and shrinks the swollen airways. Use these drops 2-3 times a day. Avoid frequent usage since it can cause a nose sore for your baby.

Use Honey

Avoid this method if your baby is below 1 yr of age since its usage can cause infant botulism in newborns. However, for babies 1yr and older try giving your child ½ teaspoon of honey before going to bed. Honey can loosen up the mucus, and as per studies, it is said to be better than trying any store-bought syrup.

Give Adequate Liquid Intake

Keep your baby hydrated, when there is enough water in the body the mucus loosens and your baby can easily blow it off.

Use Humidifier

Moisture in the air makes it easier for mucus to loosen up. So, run a humidifier in the room. A warm bath for a while can also help.

Note: Give easy-to-swallow foods since scratchy sore throats can be difficult to swallow hard foods.
