Washington Drawings: Abe to Zoo
By Dhiru A. Thadani
This book represents two loves ? the love of drawing and the love for Washington, DC. Drawing has been an integral part of Dhiru?s life since he was a young boy, and his passion for the city of Washington started 50 years ago. In 2021, during the second year of the pandemic, he began making drawings to capture some of his favorite places and moments in the hometown of his adulthood. Twenty-six of these pen and ink drawings are included in this publication, one to represent each letter of the alphabet. Each drawing is accompanied by text that describes the subject matter and offers insights into architecture, urban design, sustainability, equity, and beauty.? Hardcover, 64 pages.

Barry Farm-Hillsdale in Anacostia: A Historic African American Community
By Alcione M. Amos
Barry Farm?Hillsdale was created under the auspices of the Freedmen?s Bureau in 1867 in what was then the outskirts of the nation?s capital. Residents built churches and schools, and the community became successful. In the 1940s, youth from the community courageously desegregated the Anacostia Pool, and Barry Farm Dwellings was built to house war workers. In the 1950s, community parents joined the fight to desegregate schools in Washington, D.C., as local leaders fought off plans to redevelop the area. Both the women and the youth of Barry Farm Dwellings, then public housing, were at the forefront of the fight to improve their lives and those of their neighbors in the 1960s, but community identity was being subsumed into the larger Anacostia neighborhood. Curator and historian Alcione M. Amos tells these little-remembered stories.? Arcadia Publishing, paperback, 224 pages.

Building Washington National Cathedral
by R. Andrew Bittner
Washington National Cathedral is a Gothic great church built between 1907 and 1990. Despite being built entirely during the 20th century, the techniques used were the same as those used on the centuries-old Gothic churches in Europe. What powered the larger tools and cranes was different, but otherwise, the processes, ordering, and artistic finishing were almost entirely medieval. The last time a building of this magnitude was built using these techniques, cameras did not exist. Images of America: Building Washington National Cathedral divides the 20th century into decades to detail what must be the first published beginning-to-completion photographic record of the construction of a Gothic cathedral. Capital Losses: A Cultural History of Washington’s Destroyed Buildings
by James W. Goode
An elegant, completely updated edition of the landmark study of Washington’s lost architecture The publication of Capital Losses a quarter century ago created a clarion call for preservation action by documenting the wanton destruction of many architecturally and culturally significant buildings in the nation’s capital. In the decades since, rising public awareness and the passage of the Historic District and Historic Landmark Protection Act in 1978 have slowed the pace of thoughtless destruction. But as this completely new and updated edition of Capital Losses demonstrates, vigilance remains the watchword, especially as pressures for urban growth continue to intensify in historic neighborhoods. At once a visual delight, a fascinating social history, and an eloquent appeal for ongoing awareness, Capital Losses reveals the Washington that was and how it became what it is today. This updated edition includes eighteen more treasures lost and ninety additional historic photographs. The 270 buildings featured here represent a legacy forever gone, a cultural heritage destroyed in the name of “progress.” A thoughtful introduction by noted architectural historian Richard Longstreth brings the preservation story up to the present.
