Castles of New York
By Scott Ian Barry
An architectural and historical tour of twenty-nine of New York State’s finest castles.
Often the highlight of any European vacation, castles have captured the hearts of architecture buffs and romantics for generations. However, splendid examples of the form can be found right here in New York, as award-winning photographer Scott Ian Barry shows in this architectural and historical tour of twenty-nine of his favorite castles throughout the state. Included here are such well-known destinations as Castle Gould on Long Island, Belvedere Castle in Central Park, and Frederic Edwin Church’s nineteenth-century Moorish castle Olana just south of Hudson, along with less well-known and more off-the-beaten-track structures, including Boldt Castle on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands and “Cat Rock” Castle in Garrison. In words and in stunning photographs, Barry tells us the story behind each castle, while also exploring along the way what draws him?and us?to these monumental buildings in the first place.

Borderwall as Architecture
By Ronald Rael
Borderwall as Architecture is an artistic and intellectual hand grenade of a book, and a timely re-examination of what the physical barrier that divides the United States of America from the United Mexican States is and could be. It is both a protest against the wall and a projection about its future. Through a series of propositions suggesting that the nearly seven hundred miles of wall is an opportunity for economic and social development along the border that encourages its conceptual and physical dismantling, the book takes readers on a journey along a wall that cuts through a ?third nation??the Divided States of America. On the way the transformative effects of the wall on people, animals, and the natural and built landscape are exposed and interrogated through the story of people who, on both sides of the border, transform the wall, challenging its existence in remarkably creative ways. Coupled with these real-life accounts are counterproposals for the wall, created by Rael?s studio, that reimagine, hyperbolize, or question the wall and its construction, cost, performance, and meaning. Rael proposes that despite the intended use of the wall, which is to keep people out and away, the wall is instead an attractor, engaging both sides in a common dialogue. Included is a collection of reflections on the wall and its consequences by leading experts Michael Dear, Norma Iglesias-Prieto, Marcello Di Cintio, and Teddy Cruz. Publisher:? University of California. Paperback, 200 pages.

Authentic Color Schemes for Victorian Houses
When the authors, a pair of respected architects, first published this beautiful book in the late Victorian era, they meant it as a wakeup call to the forward-looking homeowners of the time ? inviting them to eschew “the old puritanical hatred of color, which found its natural outcome in white houses with green blinds” and join in the revolutionary trend toward “advanced notions, in which the more positive colors find a chance of expression.” The book helped homeowners to attain this goal through its presentation of full-color illustrations of attractive, up-to-date color schemes for houses, with special attention given to the refined lines of Queen Anne-style homes.
The heart of the book is the section of 20 exquisite color plates ? each reproducing a flawlessly executed architectural drawing that shows the color possibilities for a specific house, and each accompanied by an extensive written description of the colors to be used for exterior walls and trim. An informative introductory section gives a clear explanation of how to mix primary and secondary colors to achieve such popular, mellow tones of the period as olive, russet, citrine, buff, plum, and sage. This authentic source of inspiration and suggestions will be prized by restorationists, architects, home-builders, and lovers of Victoriana.

Architecture of Authority
By Richard Ross
For the past several years?and with seemingly limitless access?Richard Ross has been making unsettling and thought-provoking pictures of architectural spaces that exert power over the individuals within them.

From a Montessori preschool to churches, mosques, and diverse civic spaces?a Swedish courtroom, the Iraqi National Assembly hall, the United Nations?the images in Architecture of Authority build to ever harsher manifestations of authority: an interrogation room at Guant?namo, segregation cells at Abu Ghraib, and finally, a capital punishment death chamber.

Though visually cool, this work deals with hot-button issues: the surveillance that increasingly intrudes on post9/11 life, the abuse of power, the erosion of individual liberty. The connections among the various architectures are striking; as Ross points out: ?The Santa Barbara Mission confessional and the LAPD robbery homicide interrogation rooms are the same intimate proportions. Both are made to solicit a confession in exchange for some form of redemption.?

A Field Guide to American Houses: The Definitive Guide to Identifying and Understanding America’s Domestic Architecture
By Virginia Savage McAlester
Here at last: the fully expanded, updated, and freshly designed second edition of the most comprehensive and widely acclaimed guide to domestic architecture?in print since its publication in 1984, and acknowledged everywhere as the unmatched, essential reference to American houses.

Focusing on dwellings in urban and suburban neighborhoods and rural locations all across the continental United States?houses built over the past three hundred years reflecting every social and economic background?this guide provides in-depth information on the essentials of domestic architecture with facts and frames of reference that will enable you to look in a fresh way at the houses around you. With more than 1,600 detailed photographs and line illustrations, and a lucid, vastly informative text, it will teach you not only to recognize distinct architectural styles but also to understand their historical significance. What does that cornice signify? Or that porch? The shape of that door? The window treatment? When was this house built? What does the style say about its builders and their eras? You’ll find the answers to these and myriad other questions in this encyclopedic and eminently practical book.

Here are more than fifty styles and their variants, spanning seven distinct historical periods. Each style is illustrated with a large schematic drawing that highlights its most important identifying features. Additional drawings and photographs provide, at a glance, common alternative shapes, principal subtypes, and close-up views of typical small details?windows, doors, cornices, etc.?that can be difficult to see in full-house illustrations. The accompanying text explains the identifying features of each style, describing where and in what quantity they can be found, discussing all of its notable variants, and tracing their origin and history.

The book’s introductory chapters provide invaluable general discussions of construction materials and techniques, house shapes, and the various traditions of architectural fashion that have influenced American house design through the past three centuries. A pictorial key and glossary simplifies identification, connecting easily recognized architectural features?the presence of a tile roof, for example?to the styles in which that feature is likely to be found.
?
Among the new material included in this edition are chapters on styles that have emerged in the thirty years since the previous edition; a groundbreaking chapter on the development and evolution of American neighborhoods; an appendix on approaches to construction in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries; an expanded bibliography; and 600 new photographs and line drawings throughout.
?
Here is an indispensable resource?both easy and pleasurable to use?for the house lover and the curious tourist, for the house buyer and the weekend stroller, for neighborhood preservation groups, architecture buffs, and everyone who wants to know more about their own homes and communities. It is an invaluable book of American architecture, culture, and history.?Publisher: Knopf.? Softcover.
